Stellar Alchemy are photogravure printing plates, plated in gold, silver and copper. They are printing plates from the work, The Colourful Aftermath of a Violent Stellar Death II and has images of the supernova remnant SN1572 etched into them. Supernova remnant are the remains from exploding stars. Ultraviolet (UV) light is produced by stars and also the light form that is used for etching photogravure printing plates.
The transformation of metals into gold, something once dreamed of by alchemists, is a process commonly occurring in the cores of massive stars. UV light (from the stars) has etched an image of a dying star into the printing plates. The plates are covered by the precious elements forged in the explosion. The work reflects upon the cosmic cycle of life and death, and how creation and destruction are dependently intertwined.
