THEORY OF COLOURS
2018
Theory Of Colours are unique colour photograms, an analogue photographic technique that involves placing objects directly onto light-sensitive photographic paper and exposing them to light. The title Theory Of Colours is from the 1810 book by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, wherein he characterises colour as arising from the dynamic interplay of darkness and light.
Goethe’s theory originated in his occupation with painting and primarily had its influence on the arts. Inspired by this, the images on the photograms were made by arranging cotton and linen fabrics onto photographic paper to reference the painter’s canvas.
The process of colour photography requires pure darkness as the images are formed the split second the paper is exposed to light. Photographic images are formed in a dynamic interplay of darkness and light.
