POCKET PHOTOS
Bladr, Copenhagen, Denmark
16.01.2020 - 01.02.2020
Press release
Visual artist Laila Svensgaard is exhibiting a part of her ongoing project, Pocket Photos, at Bladr. In the work, Svensgaard explores the pocket as a camera. She does this by asking various people to carry a piece of unexposed photographic paper in a pocket. The photographic paper is exposed by the light that penetrates through the pocket, thereby creating a direct imprint on the paper. This imprint provides an image of the body's and the fabric's movement over time and space.
Light and time have been thematic foundations in Svensgaard's exploration of photography in recent years. The word photography literally means writing with light, and in his 1980 book Camera Lucida, Roland Barthes refers to the camera as a clock that tells time. Based on these considerations, the artist investigates light and the imprints that light leaves over time as it passes over a material like photographic paper.
In the exhibition, Svensgaard shows a selection of her Pocket Photos as well as a new artist book that supplements the artist book Pocket Photos from 2019. Additionally, Svensgaard presents another new work, consisting of a large-sized sewn pocket. The pocket will hang in the window facing the street, and in it, photographic paper will be exposed during the exhibition period. The photographic paper will be developed continuously, and the photographs will be added to the exhibition.
